Enjoy boating in any form? Get aboard : No boat needed, all welcome.

We invite you to our home waters of Matagorda Bay. Located midway between Galveston and Corpus Christi, we enjoy the best kept secret on the Texas coast. Open water sailing, excellent fishing, and some of the finest people you will ever find.

If you happen to be passing by the Matagorda jetties, or transiting the ICW, turn on in.  Most of Matagorda Bay has 12' depths but watch for shoals extending far out from the banks.  For a surprise free arrival into Palacios, intersect the Palacios channel below Marker R32 and follow the channel into Palacios.  We look forward to seeing you!

Come on down for a visit!

Regatta Update

A special yacht club meeting is called for Friday Aug 30, 2019 at the Outrigger at 5:00 PM by the Commodore. It will be a short meeting about rescheduling the Cannonball Run on Oct 19 and 20.

Regatta Update

Palacios Yacht Club is still very interested in hosting the Cannonball Run. Originally we found Sept 14/15 or Sep 21/22 as alternate dates but that didn’t work out. We have looked some more and found Oct 19&20 to be the only viable dates here in Palacios. However, a number of our key players will not be available on one or both of those dates. I am reaching out to the community for as much help as possible, but will need your support as well. Specifically, PROs and markset boats if we cannot get enough. I know you are looking at an alternate venue which may be needed, given the possibility of Oct 19&20 not working out. In any case, I hope that we can have the regatta either here or by Galveston Bay. Let’s make it happen. Please respond with questions or comments. Thank you Ted Riccio - Commodore/p>

Regatta Update

Unfortunately, due to high fecal bacteria counts at the Palacios South beaches, we will not put on the Regatta next weekend. The previously green indicator turned red yesterday. The board leaders discussed our options last evening and decided that we could not wait for further test results, plus the previous results were so high the consensus was they would not come down enough in the next couple of days and if they do, we cannot wait until next Wed to find out the next results. We are exploring the possibility of re-scheduling it in Sept. We will contact the key players and if there is a possibility of rescheduling it on a particular weekend, I'll send another e-mail to look for support. The indicators can be seen on TexasBeachWatch.com I thank you for your support. Ted Riccio - Commodore

Beach Watch

We don't wish to cause an alarm but we need to call your attention to a potential heath hazard currently in Matagorda's Tres Palacios Bay. The Texas Gov Beach Watch is listing the Palacios Pavilion area as having high fecal bacteria counts designating the beach as "swimming is not recommended." While the levels are high, samples are taken every 24 hours, but we don't know if the levels will be back to normal by the date of the Cannonball Run regatta. We will continue to monitor the web page results. Here's a link to the Texas Beach Watch Site.

Youth Sailing

Youngsters from 7 years to 15 years are eligible to be involved in the Cannonball Run Regatta - usually held toward the end of August. There are additional regattas earlier in other places. Lessons will start in the spring of 2019 around April or May and last a couple of hours. There are minimal classroom studies with and emphasis on getting on the water. Lessons are usually Friday and Saturday evenings but may be canceled due to weather. For those signing up, we will have tan on-the-water event in the next month or so - probably a Saturday.

Club Activities

Meetings are generally held starting at 6pm on the second Friday of the month at the Outrigger Event Center on 5th and Commerce Streets in Historic 'Oldtown' Palacios. Members, guests, volunteers and visitors are all welcome!

The club also sponsors special events such as the Annual Coon Island Raft-Up, the Cannonball Run Regatta, special cook-outs and the Chili and Mardis Gras Gumbo cook-offs, 4th of July, Oktoberfest, holiday Boat Decorating Contest and various other boating and club related events. See the "Events" section for specific dates. Here are some of out past activities...

December 1st, 2018. Lighted Boat Parade. meetingsMembers helped welcome Santa's arrival into Palacios. The La Petite Belle and Scott & Helen's Houseboat were light up and escorted the shrimp boat from Grassy Point that brought Santa into town at the 4th Street Pier and The Luther Hotel. Fireworks and holiday lights made for a festive occasion. Alica and Markus brought a fruit salad and a good time was had by all.

October 20th, 2018. While it was a little rainy, members enjoyed a PYC Flotilla and lunch out on the bay. Thanks to Martha and Ted for supplying a fine spread and a big shout out to Scott and Helen for bringing their cozy house boat which acted as the main party platform, along with Riccio's cabin cruiser.

pirate festival

October 6th, 2018. Thanks to all the club members who came out to help with the PYC booth at the Palacios Pirate Festival to help raise funds for our local museum. We had a blast! Literally! Matt fired a cannon from La Petite Belle - a real crown pleaser. The Riccio's also set up a fun rope bridge for kids to climb and build confidence, while having fun. Markus helped kids master simple knots and Martha taught them how to spell their names using signal flags.

September 8th, 2018. Members assembled at the South Bay Marina to get an overview of the rigging on the La Petite Belle replica of La Salle's 17th century sailing ship (a barque) from Commodore Ted Riccio.

June 23-24, 2018. Thanks to club members and all the volunteers that came out to help put on this year's Cannonball Run Regatta. A special shout out to all the participants, who put on a great set of races.

Thanks to everyone who came to the annual Coon Island Raft-Up on June 2nd. We had a great time - the weather was good, the food was plentiful, and even the dolphins came by to say hello! We made a few new friends on our outing, and hopefully we can do it again soon!

A big thanks to Sherry Housely and the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the informative and very interesting presentation at our March 10th meeting. I think we all came away with something new about boating safety and regulations.

Welcome to Palacios Texas

Port Lavaca and Nautical Landings Marina are located near the head of Lavaca Bay.  From the ICW, proceed inbound in the Matagorda Ship Channel until you reach the preferred channel marker, green over red dayboard "PL" where the channel splits.  Bear left into Port Lavaca Channel and pick up Green "1" - - at night flashing 2.5 sec. green.  Proceed to Green #15 then bear left..  Keep the red triangular markers to your right and follow them into the Nautical Landings Marina.

Nearby is the town of Matagorda, one of the oldest seaports in the state and now a recreational retreat.

Welcome to Matagorda Texas

We thank the following businesses, organizations and individuals who generously support the Cannonball Run Regatta and the Palacios community.

For many years the Palacios Yacht Club has hosted the Cannonball Run Sailing Regatta. This regatta is part of a state-wide circuit for youth sailors who compete for state and national recognition. This year's regatta is scheduled for August 17-18th and will be headquartered at the new Palacios Educational Pavilion.

We are fortunate to have these regattas interested in our bay for their contests and we anticipate that it will bring almost 100 sailors and their families to Palacios for the weekend. Last year's regatta brought almost $19,000 of economic benefit to the community and we supported our first two local Palacios entrants (this year we expect to have three local sailors).

Races take place all day Saturday, August 17th and half of the day Sunday, August 18th. We are looking for volunteers to help with on-shore (scorekeeping, setup, and meals) and on-water (safety and race committee boat) needs - no previous sailing experience is required. If you have a boat or are willing to help on the water during the races we especially need you!

If you are interested please contact Rick at (832)473-9852.
